Essential Oils for your Baby

Because a baby’s skin is so delicate it is a good idea to dilute all essential oils before applying. There are some exceptions and plenty of moms who have used some oils “neat” (undiluted) without any problem, but since diluted an oil does NOT dilute the effectiveness, I always prefer to dilute my oils.

A good rule of thumb is to dilute one drop of essential oil with 1 tablespoon of a carrier oil such as coconut or olive.

Avoid diffusing strong oils (like cinnamon, peppermint, or oregano) in the baby’s room. It’s also recommended to cover your baby’s socks after applying essential oils and to avoid putting oils on the baby’s hands so that the oils don’t end up in her mouth.

I would only recommend Young Living essential oils. Click here to know why. I also highly recommend getting the premium starter kit as almost all the oils you need are already there, plus the home diffuser, which I guarantee you, you will get to use EVERY SINGLE DAY if you are like me. :) Learn more on how to get your hands on this kit.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint has a strong, clean, fresh, minty aroma. One of the oldest and most highly regarded herbs for soothing digestion, it may also restore digestive efficiency.
Jean Valnet, MD studied peppermint’s supportive effect on the liver and respiratory systems.
Other scientists have also researched peppermint’s role in improving taste and smell when inhaled.
Dr. William N. Dember of the University of Cincinnati studied peppermint’s ability to improve concentration and mental sharpness.
Alan Hirsch MD studied peppermint’s ability to directly affect the brain’s satiety center, which triggers a sensation of fullness after meals.
Peppermint may also be used to enhance the flavor of food and water.

Basic Uses of Peppermint Essential Oil

  • Add a drop of peppermint essential oil to herbal tea to help aid normal digestion.
  • Massage several drops of peppermint essential oil on the abdomen, place a drop on wrists, or inhale to soothe the minor stomach discomfort associated with travel.
  • Rub one drop of peppermint essential oil on the temples, forehead, over the sinuses (careful to avoid contact with your eyes), and on the back of the neck to relieve head pressure.
  • Place 2 drops of peppermint essential oil on the tongue and rub another drop of oil under the nose to help improve concentration and alertness.
  • Apply peppermint essential oil to the back of the neck and shoulders throughout the day to keep energy up.
  • Inhale peppermint essential oil, apply topically to your temples or neck, or put a drop on your tongue or in water to jump-start your morning routine.
  • Diffuse or inhale peppermint essential oil mid-morning to curb the desire to snack.
  • Inhale peppermint essential oil or rub a drop on to your abdomen to soothe minor stomach discomfort.

Special Precautions and Warnings:

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: It is LIKELY SAFE to take peppermint in amounts normally found in food during pregnancy and breast-feeding. However, not enough is known about the safety of taking larger amounts used for medicine. It’s best not to take these larger amounts if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.

Lemon Essential Oil

Lemon Essential Oil

Lemon has a strong, purifying, citrus scent that is revitalizing and uplifting.
Lemon consists of 68% d-limonene, a powerful antioxidant. It is refreshing in water and may be beneficial for the skin. Lemon may also be used to enhance the flavor of foods.
Lemon essential oil is cold-pressed from the rinds of lemons. Jean Valnet, MD estimated that it takes 3,000 lemons to produce one kilo of oil. In his book, The Practice of Aromatherapy, Valnet wrote that lemon is a tonic for supporting the nervous and sympathetic nervous system.

Basic Uses of Lemon Essential Oil

  • Use 1–2 drops of lemon essential oil to remove gum, oil, grease spots, glue or adhesive, and crayon from most surfaces.
  • Combine 2–3 drops of lemon essential oil with water in a spray bottle to help cleanse and sanitize surfaces.
  • Place a drop of lemon essential oil on oily skin or blemishes to help balance oil glands and minimize oil production.
  • Soothe corns, calluses, or bunions by rubbing lemon essential oil on the affected area morning and evening.
  • Massage lemon essential oil into cellulite to help improve circulation and eliminate waste from cells.
  • Add lemon essential oil to your morning tea or breakfast shake for a refreshing pick-me-up.
  • Inhale lemon essential oil or place a few drops on a cotton ball to replenish your mind, body, and spirit.
  • Add 10–15 drops of lemon essential oil to a gallon of carpet cleaning solution to help pull out stains, brighten carpet and rugs, and leave a fresh smell in the room.
  • Add several drops of lemon essential oil to a chicken marinade for a delicious dinner.
  • Place a few drops of your favorite citrus essential oil on a cotton ball and put in the refrigerator to help eliminate odors.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender has a fresh, sweet, floral, herbaceous aroma that is soothing and refreshing. Because it is the most versatile of all essential oils, no home should be without it.
Lavender is an adaptogen, and therefore can assist the body when adapting to stress or imbalances. It is a great aid for relaxing and winding down before bedtime, yet has balancing properties that can also boost stamina and energy.
Therapeutic-grade lavender is highly regarded for skin and beauty. It may be used to soothe and cleanse common cuts, bruises, and skin irritations.
The French scientist René Gattefossé was among the first to discover these properties when he was severely burned in a laboratory explosion. Lavender may also be used to enhance the flavor of foods.

Basic Uses of Lavender Essential Oil

  • Soothe minor burns by applying 2–3 drops of lavender essential oil to the affected area.
  • Rub lavender essential oil on dry or chapped skin to moisturize the affected area.
  • Add a few drops of lavender essential oil to a cotton ball and place it in closets and drawers to scent linens and repel moths and insects.
  • You may be able to minimize the appearance of scar tissue by massaging lavender essential oil on or around affected areas.
  • Place a few drops of lavender essential oil on a wet cloth or dryer ball to deodorize and freshen your laundry.
  • Diffuse lavender essential oil to minimize seasonal discomforts.
  • Rub a few drops of lavender essential oil onto your hand and spread over your child’s pillow to help him/her sleep.
  • Diffuse lavender essential oil to set the mood for a baby shower or social gathering.
  • Diffuse or inhale lavender essential oil to calm your mind, body, and spirit after a hard day’s work.

Get Started!

You can get started using Young Living Essential Oils in one of two ways:
  1. Ordering as a Wholesale Member
  2. Ordering as a Retail Customer.
Retail customers pay FULL retail price. I do not recommend ordering as a retail customer. Instead, I recommend becoming a Wholesale Member.

Not only will you receive a 24% discount off retail price on every Young Living product, you also have your choice of three starter kits. This makes it easy for you to get started using essential oils.

The best value, by far, is the Premium Starter Kit (PSK).

See video below as our upline, Vanessa, unboxes her PSK.

The Premium Starter Kit
The Premium Starter Kit (US version) comes with:
  • 10 essential oils (Everyday Oils Collection + free Stress Away )
  • Dewdrop or Home Diffuser - 100v (subject to availability, as per YL's discretion)
  • A rollerball for your bottles
  • 2 Sample Packets each of Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, Peace & Calming, and Thieves)
  • 2 2-oz. Sample of Ningxia Red
  • Product Guides and Price List
The kit retails for over $300, but as a wholesale member, you get a 50% discount. In addition, as a wholesale member you will enjoy a 24% discount on all future orders as well as be eligible for a cool customer loyalty program called Essential Rewards.

However, for other countries other than the US, Young Living has the International Version which includes:
  • 8 essential oils (Essential 7  Oils Collection + free Citrus Fresh)
  • Dewdrop or Home Diffuser - 220v (subject to availability, as per YL's discretion)
  • A rollerball for your bottles
  • 2 Sample Packets each of Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, Peace & Calming, and Thieves)
  • 2 2-oz. Sample of Ningxia Red
  • Product Guides and Price List
It is entirely up to you which version you want to purchase. For me though, I found that the US version is more "bang for the buck" as it includes three essential oils that are not in the international version. Mind you, they are not one of the "afforables" in their line up so I would suggest getting the US version even if it means you have to use a voltage regulator for your diffuser(you can find one cheap here in the Philippines).

If you choose to get the US version, I will have it shipped to California, then ship to the Philippines from there. Even with the additional shipping cost, it will still save you money. Hello, BoC!

My Gift to You!
To help you get started on maximizing your Young Living essential oils right away, you’ll receive a copy of the Essential Oils Pocket Reference. Over 400 pages long, this must-have resource is filled with all the information you will need to get started using your Young Living essential oils. You can look up any condition and get recommendations for specific oils and products that can help. I’ve learned so much from this little book, and I’m sure you will too!

Already decided on which version to get?
For International Version:

For US Version:
Please contact me and I will walk you through the entire procedure.

DIY Sunscreen

Living in a tropical country has the sun perpetually shining its strong rays at us for approximately 70% of the year. It's no wonder why a lot of people here are so tanned.

The majority of sunscreens on the market today are simply full of chemicals. These are some of the most common ingredients found in sunscreens today…

1. Oxybenzone
  • Acts like estrogen in the body
  • Alters sperm production in animals
  • Associated with endometriosis in women
2. Octinoxate (Octylmethoxycinnamate)
  • Hormone-like activity
  • Reproductive system, thyroid and behavioral alterations in animal studies
  • Moderate rates of skin allergy
3. Homosalate
  • Disrupts estrogen, androgen and progesterone
  • Toxic breakdown products
4. Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A Palmitate)
  • Breaks down and produce destructive free radicals when exposed to the sun's UV rays that are toxic to cells, damage DNA, and may lead to cancer
  • May speed the development of malignant cells and skin tumor

Scary huh?

In comes this DIY Sunscreen Recipe from Luke and Trisha.

This recipe calls for a particular type of zinc oxide, and I advise you, please, please, PLEASE DO NOT purchase inferior zinc oxide. You want to make sure that the zinc oxide you purchase is non-nano AND is NOT coated.

DIY Carrot Seed and Copaiba Sunscreen

Ingredients:
     1/2 cup Coconut oil
     2 tablespoons Shea Butter
     1 teaspoon Sesame oil
     1 teaspoon Aloe Vera gel
     3 teaspoons Zinc Oxide
15 drops Carrot Seed Essential Oil
     10 drops Copaiba Essential Oil

Instructions:
  1. Melt the oils and shea butter in a double broiler or a glass bowl over boiling water.
  2. Pour into a blender and add the aloe vera and zinc oxide. Blend until well mixed.
  3. Add the essential oils and blend a bit more to mix.
  4. Store in a convenient container: empty tin, small food storage container, small canning jar, etc.
  5. Keep refrigerated when not in use.
The Experience:
The sunscreen smells SO good and has worked really well so far, even on the hot summer days when we’ve been out playing the whole time.

I found it a bit inconvenient that the sunscreen was always hard or liquid because of the coconut oil. While I was keeping it in the fridge so it lasted longer (up to 6 months instead of about 3), I had to take it out for a while to melt a bit before applying.

To fix that problem, I modified the recipe by adding 2 oz of beeswax (melted with shea butter) and a teaspoon of vitamin E oil. The vitamin E helps preserve it while the beeswax gives it a creamier consistency and helped prevent it from liquifying. You can store this recipe in the similar containers or refill empty sunscreen face sticks or deodorant containers.

Some Things to Note:
  • Never use citrus essential oils because they can increase the skin’s sensitivity to the sun.
  • Keep refrigerated to last longer. We go through ours so quickly during the summer, I’ve decided to just store the thicker version in the purse or diaper bag.
  • Be sure to reapply every two hours, especially when swimming.
  • Taking vitamin C and D3 supplements in the summer can help prevent sun damage.

What Sets Young Living Apart

View Vimeo Videos

This is why I chose Young Living over any other essential oil companies: Seed To Seal.

The thing that sets Young Living's quality apart from any other company is that they have complete control over the essential oil process from the point that the seed is selected all the way through to the point where the bottle is shipped to their customers. Any other seller can only claim complete control from the time that they receive the shipment of oils pre-distilled from their supplier.

Young Living is proud to set the standard for essential oil purity and authenticity by carefully monitoring the production of our oils through our unique Seed to Seal® process. From the time the seed is sourced until the oil is sealed in the bottle, we apply the most rigorous quality controls possible to ensure that you are receiving essential oils exactly the way nature intended.

Seed
Powerful, effective essential oils come from seeds and plants that are verified for their essential oil potential by Young Living experts, partnering with university experts.

Cultivate
Young Living farms, located around the globe, are dedicated to perfecting the best growing and harvesting methods. Our experts also travel the world visiting our co-op farms to verify that their growing and cultivating processes match our high standards.

Distill
Combining ancient and modern techniques, Young Living is recognized as an innovator in essential oil distillation. We use a gentle, proprietary technique for steam extracting the most effective essential oils, as well as using cold pressing and resin tapping methods for select oils.

Test
Young Living never accepts diluted, cut, or adulterated oils. To guarantee consistent quality, our oils are tested in Young Living’s own internal labs, as well as in third-party facilities, to ensure that they meet stringent specifications, exceed international standards, and contain the optimal levels of natural bioactive compounds.

Seal
Young Living completes the Seed to Seal process in its 107,000-square-foot facility in Spanish Fork, Utah. Using state-of-the-art equipment, each essential oil is carefully bottled into protective amber glass bottles—ready to be shipped to members worldwide.

NO OTHER OIL COMPANY DOES THIS.

DIY Chlorine Remover

Who hasn't swum in a swimming pool even once this summer? I'm sure you all did! Did you know that chlorine from the swimming pool (which doesn’t wash out with a simple shampoo) can be very destructive to your hair and scalp?

Use this simple DIY Chlorine Removal Recipe found below.

Oh, and by the way, did you know that using essential oils on your hair and scalp has many benefits such as these?

• Encourages hair growth and may help minimize hair loss
• Reduces dry scalp or dandruff
• Discourages lice
• Encourages circulation to the scalp, which leads to healthier, shiny hair
• Removes chlorine and other chemicals that have built up on your hair
• Helps to remove excess sebum that has hardened into plaque and built up on the scalp (which can result in hair loss)
• Makes your hair smell great!

Special thanks to Common Scents Mom for sharing this!

Chlorine Removal Recipe

2 T. coconut oil, warmed if solid
5 drops rosemary oil
5 drops lavender oil
5 drops geranium oil
2 drops sandalwood oil

Shampoo hair and towel dry. Mix all ingredients together and massage into hair and scalp. Cover head with shower cap and leave in for 30-45 minutes (sitting under the heat from a hair dryer hood is ideal).

Rinse with cool water and style as usual. If you have oily hair, you may want to use apple cider vinegar instead of coconut oil (this will also help remove buildup).

Note:
Please be careful where you get your oils from though. Keep in mind that many essential oils on the market (even those sold in health food stores) have potentially toxic extenders. (Labeling laws allow manufacturers to use up to 50% chemical extenders and still say they are 100% pure).

We recommend this brand.

Female Natural Hormone Balance

Cellular metabolism, reproduction, sexual development, sugar and mineral homeostasis, heart rate, and digestion are among the many processes regulated by the actions of hormones.

As women age, their levels of progesterone decline and contribute to osteoporosis, increased risk of breast and uterine cancers, mood swings, depression, and many other conditions. Estrogen levels can also decline and increase women's risk of heart disease.

Between the ages of 45 and 55, these hormones decline to a point where menstruation ceases. Replacing these declining levels using topically applied progesterone or pregnenolone creams may be the most effective way to replace and boost declining hormone levels. Pregnenolone may be especially effective as it is the precursor hormone from which the body creates both progesterone and estrogens.

The most commonly prescribed drugs are conjugated estrogens (from horse urine) or synthetic medroxyprogesterone. The molecules in these synthetic hormones are foreign to the human body and can dramatically increase the risk for ovarian and breast cancer with time.

Young Living carries several natural essential-oil based products that can help with hormone balancing. These are the most popular and my personal favourites.

1. PROGESSENCE PLUS SERUM:
Progessence Plus Serum is a natural progesterone supplement made with essential oils and wild yam extract which has no harmful side effects.

Some of the benefits of wild yam (progesterone) include decrease in symptoms of menopause and PMS, reduce risk of heart attack or stroke, normalize blood sugar levels, improve bone density, combat weight gain, reduce hormonal headaches, hair loss and more.

Estrogen dominance has been linked with hair loss, weight gain, cancer, memory loss, uterine fibroids, autoimmune conditions and fatigue.

This serum was specifically designed with women in mind by D. Gary Young and Dr. Dan Purser, MD, to reduce estrogen by increasing progesterone levels. Because of its formula it does not require cyclic use or rotation of skin sites unlike most progesterone creams.

This can be used for women of all ages including teens over 12 to help naturally regulate hormones cycles. It also promotes relaxation and aids in sleeping.

2. ENDOFLEX

Provides healthy overall endocrine and glandular support for men and women. It amplifies metabolism and vitality and creates hormone balance. It supports the pineal and pituitary glands, parathyroid, thymus and adrenal glands. It may also help alleviate hot flashes and stimulate weight loss by improving metabolic function. It can also help to ease mild PMS symptoms.

3. DRAGON TIME

A wonderful relaxing blend of oils that relieves PMS symptoms and menstrual discomforts such as cramping, water retention and irregular periods. It helps balance emotions, alleviating mood swings and headaches caused by hormonal imbalance. This blend may also help men with prostate problems.

4. PRENOLONE PLUS

This cream utilizes natural pregnenolone (called the "master hormone" because it is a precursor to all the other hormones produced within the body including progesterone, estrogen and testosterone) and a small amount of natural progesterone to replenish and soften dry or irritated skin. With the help of the essential oils that are included in this formulation, the pregnenolone is quickly and efficiently transferred to the cellular level where it can be converted into the appropriate hormone that the body needs at that particular time. Unlike many natural progesterone creams, there is not the need to regulate the use of this cream as the body can eliminate what is not needed without any side effects. Also, unlike other natural hormone creams, this one can also be used by men. It may help with the following: wrinkles, libido (restores), blood sugar levels (normalizes), cell oxygen levels (restores), bone density (improves), weight control (helps use fat for energy), zinc and copper levels (normalizes), blood clotting (normalizes), thyroid action, breast cancer and fibroids (protects against), headaches, asthma, backaches, infertility, hair loss, depression, hypoglycemia, inflammation, exhaustion, insomnia, arthritis and more.

Aren't you glad we now have these? Goodbye PMS, bad mood! Hello balanced hormones!

Essential Oils 101

Ever peeled an orange or squeezed a lemon and immediately noticed the strong fragrance? Or smelled a rose and was taken to another state of mind, even for a minute? You were experiencing the essential oil of the plant!
EO’s (essential oils) are natural aromatic compounds found in the raw material of plants (leaves, stems, bark, petals, etc). The oils of plants contain the essence (this is where the word “essential” comes from) or scent of that particular plant. Therapeutic grade oils are extracted from the plant using steam distillation and are super concentrated, which is why they should be used with respect and caution.

1. Essential Oils share several properties with human blood: fight infection, contain hormone-like compounds, & initiate regeneration.

2. Essential Oils have a chemical structure similar to that of human cells & tissues, making them compatible with human protein & enabling them to be readily identified & accepted by the body.

3. Essential Oils stimulate the secretion of antibodies, neurotransmitters, endorphines, hormones, & enzymes in the human body.

4. Essential Oils do not disturb the body's natural homeostasis: if one constituent exerts too strong an effect, another constituent may counteract it. (Synthetic chemicals usually have only one action & often disrupt homeostasis.)

5. Their small molecules allow them to penetrate cell membranes & diffuse throughout the blood & tissues. Their lipid-soluble structure is very similar to the makeup of our cell membranes.

6. When inhaled, their molecules go directly to the limbic system of the brain, which is directly connected to areas of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels & hormone balance -- allowing them to have profound physiological & psychological effects.

7. When applied topically, it takes just 20 minutes for an oil to effect every cell in the body! When inhaling it takes only 22 seconds for it to reach the brain!
